Amaravati, March 5: The Andhra Pradesh government has initiated power infrastructure projects worth approximately ₹6,000 crore to meet the increasing electricity demand in the state.
Energy Minister G. Ravi Kumar announced in the Assembly on Thursday that new substations are being constructed in areas with high electricity loads.
During the question hour, the minister addressed inquiries from legislators Aditi Vijayalakshmi Gajapathiraju, Kolla Lalitha Kumari, and Muttumula Ashok Reddy. He stated that over 200 new 33/11 kV substations have been identified as necessary in regions with high electricity demand, and the construction process has commenced.
The minister noted that since the coalition government led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu took office, there has been a surge in industrial establishments in the state. Consequently, daily electricity consumption is expected to rise from 263 million units to nearly 280 million units.
To accommodate this growing demand, substations with capacities of 400 kV, 220 kV, and 132 kV are being constructed across the state. Additionally, a significant number of agricultural electricity connections have been provided. The rise in commercial, industrial, and domestic needs has also contributed to increased electricity consumption.
The minister emphasized that the state government’s primary goal is to ensure there is no electricity shortage in any part of the state in the coming years. Construction of 33/11 kV substations and power lines continues, keeping future demand and load growth in mind.
He mentioned that the construction of the Venugopalapuram substation in the Vizianagaram district is currently in the re-tendering process and is expected to be completed by March 2027. Furthermore, projects worth ₹46 crore related to 220 kV and 132 kV lines in Vizianagaram district have been completed and will be operational soon. The construction of the Venugopalapuram substation is ongoing at a cost of ₹77 crore.
During this session, legislator Aditi Gajapathiraju requested the implementation of an underground cabling system in Vizianagaram, similar to that in Visakhapatnam. In response, the energy minister stated that underground cabling is a costly arrangement and will be considered based on fund availability and necessity.
Additionally, legislator Muttumula Ashok Reddy demanded the establishment of a 220 kV substation in the Giddalur Assembly constituency. The minister assured that appropriate actions would be taken based on the feasibility report from energy department officials.
