New Delhi, August 3: Nestled in the picturesque valleys of Uttarakhand, Champawat is a blend of history and spirituality. The ancient Baleshwar Temple here is renowned for its rich history and stunning architectural artistry. On the first Monday of Sawan, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami highlighted the temple’s grandeur.
In a special video shared on the social media platform ‘X’, Chief Minister Dhami wrote, “The ancient Baleshwar Temple in Champawat district of Devbhoomi Uttarakhand is a magnificent confluence of sacred faith in Lord Shiva, a rich history, and splendid architectural art. The exquisite carvings on the stones and the ancient craftsmanship narrate the glorious tales of centuries-old cultural heritage. When visiting Champawat, make sure to visit this sacred abode of Shiva to experience profound spiritual peace and an unforgettable connection with our rich heritage.”
The Baleshwar Temple, located 76 kilometers from Pithoragarh, is the most artistic temple in Champawat district. It is part of a group of temples dedicated to Baleshwar, Ratneshwar, and Champavati Durga, built by the early kings of the Chand dynasty. The original temple featured intricate structural designs and a sanctuary with a mandapa. The roofs of these temples still showcase elaborate carvings, serving as evidence of their ancient glory and artistic excellence.
According to legend, the temple dedicated to Lord Shiva was once the capital of the Nagas. However, it appears that the city was named after their sister Champavati, who meditated in the Baleshwar Temple dedicated to Shiva. Today, the goddess here is still referred to as Champavati, and there is a temple within the old temple complex. Thus, the Chand dynasty constructed the Baleshwar temple complex and established it as their capital between the 10th and 12th centuries. The goddess also became their patron and protective deity.
In addition to Baleshwar, Champawat is home to several other temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, including Kranteshwar, Maneshwar, Tarkeshwar, Rishneshwar, Dikteshwar, and Mallarshwar. There is also a cave known as Patal Rudreshwar.
