Mumbai, June 23: Congress leader Charan Singh Sapra has accused the BJP of undermining democratic institutions following the election of Arup Roy as the TMC chairman in West Bengal, replacing Mamata Banerjee. He stated that such incidents are increasingly occurring in various states governed by the BJP.
Sapra emphasized that democracy is under siege, describing the situation as an assault on democratic values. He noted that the events in West Bengal and Maharashtra are part of a troubling trend. The rebel faction is expected to present itself as the legitimate party and approach the assembly speaker with their grievances. According to him, this matter will likely escalate to the courts, leading to a prolonged legal battle.
He alleged that the BJP is employing such tactics to fulfill its political objectives. Sapra claimed that the party is attempting to sway MPs from other parties to secure the numbers needed to pass the Delimitation Bill. He expressed concern over the erosion of democracy, stating that the ideals of Baba Saheb are being disregarded.
Additionally, Sapra reacted sharply to allegations of misuse of donations for the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. He asserted that this issue transcends mere theft of donations; it represents an attack on the faith and sentiments of millions. The alleged misappropriation of funds in Ayodhya is not just a case of donation theft, and those responsible should face strict action.
He also questioned the process of the SIT formed for this case. Sapra pointed out that SITs are typically established after an FIR is filed, yet no FIR has been registered in this instance. He remarked that the formation of an SIT should occur only after an FIR is lodged. He criticized the BJP for targeting former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for his silence while also calling for RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat to speak out against this issue.
Furthermore, he highlighted that the individuals making allegations are linked to the same organization, which intensifies the seriousness of the matter. He suggested that the absence of an FIR indicates that the government may be trying to shield someone.
In response to Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s claims about the success of ‘Operation Tiger,’ Sapra stated that the operation is deemed successful due to the extensive use of various means, including power, money, and muscle. He claimed that those MPs now joining the ruling party previously complained about a lack of funding and the withholding of their regional development funds. They now believe that joining the ruling party will grant them access to those funds.
Sapra accused the Mahayuti government of discriminating against opposition representatives, asserting that the government does not provide equal funding to opposition MPs and MLAs. He stated that there are different rules for ruling party members and opposition members within the Mahayuti government.
