Rewa, August 29: An investigation has been initiated following the tragic death of a pregnant woman and her unborn child at Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Rewa. Two doctors and two nursing officials have been suspended in connection with this incident.
Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla announced on Friday that the state government has formed a committee to investigate allegations of medical negligence and mistreatment towards the woman’s family.
Shukla, who oversees the Health Ministry, emphasized that patient safety and adherence to medical protocols are top priorities for the government. He stressed the importance of treating patients and their families with sensitivity and respect, stating that any form of negligence will not be tolerated.
The Deputy Chief Minister instructed officials to ensure a fair investigation and indicated that strict action would be taken against those found guilty. He further mentioned that actions would be based on the committee’s findings, and necessary corrective measures would be implemented to prevent such incidents from recurring.
According to government sources, Kalpana Mishra, the wife of Amit Mishra from Hatwa village under the Baikunthpur police station in Rewa district, was admitted to the obstetrics and gynecology department of Gandhi Memorial Hospital around 2:38 AM on August 26. Tragically, both she and her unborn child passed away later that night at approximately 11:55 PM.
Medical records revealed that upon admission, her platelet count was around 30,000 per microliter, her blood pressure was extremely high, and elevated liver enzymes were noted. Doctors diagnosed her with severe pre-eclampsia, severe thrombocytopenia, and HELLP syndrome, alongside a full-term pregnancy. The government stated that treatment and necessary medical procedures were initiated as per established protocols.
Following the incident, the family filed a complaint alleging mistreatment and negligence in care. Sonal Agarwal from the obstetrics and gynecology department and Nidhi Pandey from the anesthesia department were suspended immediately for gross negligence and serious misconduct. Both nursing officials faced suspension due to allegations of mistreatment towards the family.
A committee of senior doctors has been formed to investigate the allegations. At the family’s request, a joint team from Rewa District Hospital and Medical College conducted a post-mortem on the woman and her unborn child. After completing the necessary formalities, the bodies were transported back to their ancestral village by ambulance.
