Devastating Floods in Nepal: A Call for International Aid

Mumbai, August 29: The severe floods in Nepal have caused widespread destruction, marking what is being described as the second-largest disaster since the 2015 earthquake. Tamara Demuria, the head of humanitarian affairs at Chorus International, has expressed deep concern over the situation.

She stated that the devastation is far greater than any possible estimate, with many families losing everything. Demuria urged the international community, including India and the United States, to unite and provide assistance during this critical time.

The affected areas are the same regions where her organization had previously operated after the 2015 earthquake. However, the presence of international organizations has diminished since then. After assessing the riverbanks in the northern regions, she reported that the conditions are extremely alarming, with homes and solar panels swept away, livelihoods destroyed, and no signs of normalcy in sight.

Demuria remarked, “This is perhaps the second-largest disaster since 2015. The impact is far beyond any possible number. At this moment, responding and providing aid in any way possible—whether from neighboring countries, the international community, or through supplies from abroad—is the best course of action for these communities. Some families have lost everything. Therefore, I believe it is the best time for all of us, whether from India, the United States, or any other country or donor, to come together as a community to help those in need. This is the most urgent time.”

Regarding rescue operations in the affected areas, Tamara Demuria noted, “Historically, this is the area where we ran programs to support vulnerable communities after the 2015 earthquake. Clearly, since then, the presence of international organizations and any form of assistance has decreased. We are very concerned as we witness significant devastation. I traveled along the riverbanks to assess the damage. The footage I captured is very distressing. Homes have been washed away, solar panels are completely submerged, and many livelihoods have been lost.”
