Chandigarh, September 10 (Daily Kiran) : The political landscape in Punjab has intensified following the tragic suicide of Gulzar Singh, a resident of Sangrur district. Vikram Singh Majithia, the general secretary of the Shiromani Akali Dal, has voiced strong support for Singh’s grieving family, demanding that an FIR be lodged against Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema and other alleged culprits.
In a post on X, Majithia expressed solidarity with Singh’s family, stating, “I stand with the bereaved family of Gulzar Singh and call for an FIR against all alleged offenders, including Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema. Punjab has never seen such a situation. The police’s control over the funeral is a cruel attack on human dignity, executed under Cheema’s orders.”
In a video message, Majithia highlighted the troubling events unfolding in Punjab, attributing them to the failures of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government. He criticized the administration for claiming to bring change while only worsening issues, saying, “The only change is that pizza delivery has slowed down, while drug delivery has sped up. Anyone raising their voice against this is silenced.”
Majithia further alleged that the AAP government is exploiting the poor. He remarked, “For the first time in our country, raising an alarm against drugs may cost someone their life.” He has called for a CBI investigation into Singh’s case.
In another post, Majithia wrote, “Today, Gulzar Singh’s family is once again seeking justice. They recount how the police pressured them and forced them into a hurried funeral. The Dalit family claims they found nothing but bones, highlighting how the government has betrayed the sentiments of a poor Dalit family.”
Reports indicate that Gulzar Singh, 50, consumed poison out of frustration over the government’s inadequate response to the drug crisis. Despite his suffering, he spoke to others before his death, stating, “Harpal Singh Cheema is also responsible for my death.” He had previously confronted the finance minister about the state’s drug issues during a village visit.
Singh alleged that after questioning the AAP minister, the police took him aside and pressured him to apologize. In his final words, he lamented, “The sarpanch is also responsible for my death. I questioned Harpal Singh Cheema about drugs. My son uses drugs. I have lost my home. I have nothing left, and now I have consumed poison. The drug problem remains unresolved in Punjab.”
