AI in Healthcare: A Valuable Assistant, But Strong Clinical Foundations Are Essential, Says Dr. Jitendra Singh

New Delhi, April 14: Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Minister of State for Science and Technology, launched the second edition of the postgraduate textbook on ‘Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition’ on Tuesday. During the event, he emphasized that artificial intelligence (AI) can become a valuable assistant and enabler once a strong clinical foundation is established.

The minister highlighted the necessity of a robust clinical foundation in medical education. While the growing use of AI is significant, he stressed that fundamental medical knowledge and training cannot be overlooked.

The book, edited by Prof. Anupam Sibal and Dr. Sarath Gopalan, features a preface by Kathleen B. Schwartz. Dr. Singh noted that technology should complement medical education rather than replace it.

He warned that if students become overly reliant on AI without understanding basic medical principles, it could weaken their learning process and hinder their ability to become competent doctors.

Dr. Singh also pointed out that the pace of research and publications in the medical field is rapidly increasing. Therefore, it is crucial for the education system to focus more on conceptual clarity and practical training.

He stated that while technology has made access to information easier, the learning process must always be grounded in fundamental principles and practical experience.

The minister called for continuous updates to the medical education system to address new challenges, such as technological advancements and the increasing complexity of diseases.

He urged young professionals to first strengthen their basics before moving on to any specialization.

The second edition of the book includes recent medical developments, featuring a total of 45 chapters. Topics covered include inflammatory bowel disease, neuro-gastroenterology, celiac disease, and allergies related to cow’s milk.

Additionally, new subjects related to gastrointestinal and liver diseases, such as genetics, endoscopy, and liver transplants, have also been added.

This book is primarily designed for students in pediatrics, specialist doctors, and practicing pediatricians.
