Zverev Triumphs Over Kecmanovic at Munich Open 2026

Munich, April 14: In an exciting match at the Munich Open, Alexander Zverev showcased his skills by defeating Miomir Kecmanovic with a score of 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(2). The match, lasting two hours and 19 minutes, marked a significant comeback for Zverev, who avenged his earlier loss to Kecmanovic in Acapulco this February.

Playing as the top seed and defending champion in this ATP 500 clay court tournament, Zverev maintained his composure even when Kecmanovic made a strong comeback after trailing by a set and a break. Zverev displayed exceptional performance in the decisive tiebreak, executing remarkable shots, including a stunning reaction tweener volley at 4/1 when Kecmanovic’s backhand hit the net.

Aiming for his record fourth Munich Open title this week, Zverev achieved an impressive 85% success rate at the net, winning 11 out of 13 points, according to the ATP win/loss index.

In the second round, Zverev will face Gabriel Diallo. This match will be crucial as Zverev seeks to secure his first ATP Tour title of 2026. The two players have met only once on the ATP Tour, with Zverev winning their encounter earlier this year at the Australian Open.

On Tuesday afternoon, Brazil’s Joao Fonseca made a strong start by defeating Alejandro Tabilo 7-6(1), 6-3 in his opening match. The 19-year-old Fonseca, who reached the quarter-finals in Monte Carlo last week, will next compete against seventh seed Arthur Rinderknech for a spot in the quarter-finals.

Third seed Alexander Bublik and eighth seed Tallon Griekspoor both exited the tournament in the first round. Qualifier Alex Molčan defeated Bublik 6-4, 6-2, securing a matchup against Daniel Altmaier in the next round. Local favorite Altmaier triumphed over former world number 3 Marin Cilic with a score of 6-2, 6-3.

Meanwhile, Denis Shapovalov defeated Griekspoor 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 and will face the winner of the last match on Tuesday’s schedule, which features Stefanos Tsitsipas against Fabian Marozsan.

Italian stars Flavio Cobolli and Luciano Darderi also advanced to the second round. Fourth seed Cobolli defeated Diego Deddura 6-4, 7-5 to set up a match against Jiju Berks, who won against Marco Topo 6-1, 6-4. Sixth seed Darderi overcame Zhang Zhizhen 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-1 and will now play against Vit Kopriva.
