Indias Pharma Sector Emerges as a Hub of Innovation, Says PM Modi

New Delhi, April 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated on Tuesday that India’s pharmaceutical sector is evolving from being “the world’s pharmacy” to becoming a center of innovation.

Highlighting the increasing emphasis on research-based development, Modi noted that India is transitioning from a global supplier of affordable medicines to an emerging hub for pharmaceutical innovation.

In a post on X, he shared an article written by Union Health Minister JP Nadda, emphasizing that India’s pharma sector is moving up the value chain, with a strong focus on research and development, biologics, biosimilars, and next-generation therapies.

Modi remarked, “From being the world’s pharmacy to a center of innovation, India’s pharma sector is ascending the value chain.” He further added that the current government is placing significant attention on R&D, biologics, biosimilars, and advanced treatments.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) described Nadda’s article as a “must-read analysis” for understanding the direction of the country’s pharmaceutical sector.

The PMO stated, “Minister Nadda’s article provides a crucial review of how India is preparing to lead in global competition within this sector.”

The article highlights that recent policy support and the government’s sustained focus have transformed the sector’s trajectory. It points out that India is no longer limited to large-scale production of generic drugs but is also investing in advanced research capabilities and complex drug development.

According to the article, the government has prioritized innovation-based development by encouraging R&D investment and creating an ecosystem that supports cutting-edge treatments.

It also mentions the growing emphasis on biologics and biosimilars, which are seen as key drivers of the next phase of growth in the global pharma industry.

Nadda stated, “India, long regarded as ‘the world’s pharmacy’ due to its leadership in generic drugs, is now poised to move towards innovation at scale.”
