Imphal, April 14: Violence broke out in Manipur’s Bishnupur district on Tuesday, injuring 18 individuals, including five women. The unrest escalated when a mob set fire to two security vehicles, according to officials.
The chaos was triggered after a significant drug bust at Imphal Airport, where a suspected trafficker was apprehended.
A senior police officer reported that a joint operation by the Central Industrial Security Force and airport police was conducted based on credible intelligence. This led to the arrest of Mohammad Sabir Ahmed, a resident of the Moirang sub-division in Bishnupur district.
Upon thorough inspection of Ahmed’s checked baggage, authorities seized approximately 6.74 kilograms of suspected ‘brown sugar,’ concealed within six containers. The suspect has been handed over to Singjamei police station, where a case has been registered for further investigation.
During initial questioning, Ahmed disclosed information about a cache of weapons and ammunition hidden in the Kwakta area of Bishnupur district. Security forces were dispatched to the location based on this intel.
However, en route, the security team faced obstruction from locals near Thinungei in Bishnupur district. Rumors regarding the security personnel’s identity and intentions circulated among the crowd.
As tensions rose, a mob formed, blocking the security vehicles. The situation deteriorated further when some individuals turned violent, damaging and setting fire to two vehicles associated with the security forces. Attempts to detain individuals led to further unrest.
Additional forces were quickly deployed to the area. According to police officials, minimum necessary force, including tear gas, was used to disperse the crowd and restore law and order.
Eighteen civilians were injured in the incident, with all receiving necessary medical assistance. Four individuals have been arrested in connection with the mob violence. Efforts to identify others involved in arson, unlawful assembly, and obstruction of security personnel are ongoing.
A flag march was conducted by central and state forces to maintain law and order in the area. Police have urged the public to refrain from spreading rumors or misinformation and to cooperate with law enforcement agencies. Officials warned that strict action would be taken against those involved in spreading rumors, arson, and violence.
