Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Identifies 274 Unsafe Structures Ahead of Jagannath Rath Yatra

Ahmedabad, May 12: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has launched a significant initiative to address dilapidated and dangerous buildings in the city, coinciding with the 149th Jagannath Rath Yatra and the upcoming monsoon season. In a proactive measure for public safety, the AMC has identified 274 unsafe buildings and issued notices to their owners and residents.

The administration has warned that any damage to life or property resulting from the collapse of a building will be the full responsibility of the respective owner and occupant.

According to municipal officials, this special inspection campaign targeted government, semi-government, private, individual, and religious trust buildings. The focus was particularly on the older parts of the city, where the famous Rath Yatra passes. With thousands of devotees participating in this annual event, the administration is keen to avoid any risks.

The AMC has instructed owners of identified dangerous buildings to immediately remove dilapidated sections, carry out repairs, and ensure safety. The corporation has also urged residents to avoid living in or entering such buildings.

This year alone, 274 hazardous buildings have been identified in the Central Zone. Notices have been issued to the owners under Section 264 of the Gujarat Provincial Municipal Corporation (GPMC) Act. Notably, action has been intensified in the Khadia ward, as it is a major route for the Rath Yatra.

According to AMC data, between 2023 and 2025, notices were issued for 1,251 dangerous buildings in the city. With the addition of the 274 newly identified structures in 2026, this number has risen to 1,525.

The AMC has appealed to the public to remain vigilant, keep an eye on nearby dilapidated buildings, and exercise extra caution during the monsoon to prevent any accidents during the Rath Yatra and rainy season.
