Ahmedabad Launches Eco-Friendly Initiative for Kite Festival Waste

Ahmedabad, February 10: In a bid to protect the environment from the waste generated during the Uttarayan festival, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s Solid Waste Management Department has initiated a new project.

As part of this initiative, a logo themed around the Commonwealth Games 2030 has been created from the waste generated by kite strings. This innovative approach aims to raise awareness about the upcoming Commonwealth Games while promoting environmental sustainability.

The collected kite string waste has been transformed into an artistic representation, highlighting its significance as a symbol for the Commonwealth Games. Additionally, any leftover string has been utilized as fuel in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s ‘Waste to Energy’ plant, contributing to energy production.

It is important to note that the ‘Karuna Abhiyan-2026’ campaign was specifically organized to maintain cleanliness and protect the environment during the Uttarayan festival. This campaign focused on preventing injuries caused by discarded strings on the streets across seven zones and 48 wards of the city.

The initiative received significant support from various charitable organizations, including the Randal Mata Committee (Naroda), The Equal Society Development Trust (Naroda), the Bird Rescue-Peravda Group, and the Khokhra Youth Federation. Special teams, supervised by staff, collected over 120 liters of kite string waste from public areas throughout the city, amassing approximately 1200 kilograms of waste during this campaign.

Through this operation, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation aims to align energy production with the promotion of the upcoming global sports event.
