Madrid, April 15: Ademola Lookman responded to FC Barcelona’s early comeback by leading Atletico Madrid to the UEFA Champions League semifinals for the first time since 2017.
Lamin Yamal and Ferran Torres scored for Barcelona, but Lookman’s decisive finish proved crucial as Atletico clinched a 3-2 aggregate victory.
Barcelona started strong, testing Juan Musso within a minute. They were rewarded in the fourth minute when Yamal stole the ball from Clement Lenglet and set up Torres, who slotted it through Musso’s legs.
In the 22nd minute, Antoine Griezmann had a significant opportunity, indicating a more balanced match. However, Torres leveled the tie with three brilliant touches, the last of which found the top-right corner.
Another twist came before halftime when Lookman converted Marcos Llorente’s low cross in the 31st minute, putting Atletico back in front.
In the 80th minute, Eric Garcia’s foul on Alexander Sorloth diminished Barcelona’s hopes of a late comeback. Yet, they came close to scoring in stoppage time with Ronald Araujo’s header.
Atletico’s coach Diego Simeone remarked, βItβs been 14 years, but seeing the team compete still brings me immense joy. The players have changed, and we’ve had to restart multiple times, yet we are back in the top four in Europe.β
Atletico will face the winner of the upcoming semifinal clash between Arsenal and Sporting CP.
