19-Year-Old Stan Moody Qualifies for World Snooker Championship After Hospital Discharge

New Delhi, April 15: 19-year-old British player Stan Moody, who was hospitalized for treatment of tonsillitis, has made a remarkable comeback. Just one day after being discharged, he defeated China’s Jiang Jun to qualify for the World Snooker Championship for the first time. Moody will be the first British teenager to play at the Crucible since Judd Trump in 2007.

Moody secured his victory with a stunning century break in the final frame, winning 10-9 against Jiang Jun. After trailing 6-5, the world number 44 made impressive breaks of 71, 70, 113, and 127 to take a 9-8 lead. Although he missed a chance to win in the 18th frame, he redeemed himself with a brilliant score of 104 in the decisive frame.

This victory is particularly significant as Moody was hospitalized just the night before due to tonsillitis. Despite his physical discomfort, he insisted on being discharged to compete, ensuring his place on this prestigious stage.

World Snooker quoted Moody saying, “Doctors told me, ‘We know you will refuse, but we want you to stay in the hospital.’ I said no and insisted I had a match to play. I’m glad I did. They gave me some antibiotics and other medications. I won’t be going back; I really don’t like that place. At the end of the match, I’ve never felt so much pressure in my life. I’m very happy with this win. It has been my dream since I started playing.”

Alongside Moody, Antony Kowalski and Liam Pullen also achieved impressive victories in the final qualifying round for the World Championship, securing their spots at the Crucible. The three players are set to compete at the ‘Theater of Dreams’ in Sheffield, with matches starting Saturday.

Kowalski defeated Jamie Jones 10-8 in what was the biggest match of his career, becoming the first Polish player to reach the Crucible. This victory also secured his place on the tour. Meanwhile, 20-year-old Pullen triumphed over Noppon Saengkham with a score of 10-8, delivering remarkable breaks of 131 and 105.
