Mumbai, February 16: The controversy surrounding the display of a portrait of Tipu Sultan in the office of the Deputy Mayor in Malegaon has sparked sharp reactions from Abu Azmi, a legislator from the Samajwadi Party.
Azmi emphasized that the nation operates under a constitution that recognizes historical figures like Rani Lakshmibai and Tipu Sultan. He accused certain individuals of deliberately raising historical issues to foster Hindu-Muslim divisions.
In an interview with a news agency, Azmi noted that previous disputes regarding Tipu Sultan’s birth anniversary had led to government interventions. However, he pointed out that in 2024, the Bombay High Court clarified that the anniversary could be celebrated. He stated that Tipu Sultan fought against the British and struggled for India’s freedom, asserting that his legacy cannot be erased from history. He challenged those who accuse Sultan of destroying temples to specify when and which temples were affected.
The Samajwadi Party legislator highlighted that incidents of damage to religious sites are occurring in the country. He expressed his opposition to those who destroy temples or mosques, advocating for an atmosphere of brotherhood. According to him, Tipu Sultan was a brave soldier and a “Mujahid-e-Azadi.” He argued that if Sultan was harsh towards the British, it should be viewed in the context of India’s freedom struggle.
Azmi claimed that during Tipu Sultan’s reign, the economic conditions in several regions were better than those in Britain. He mentioned that historical records indicate Sultan donated to and managed several temples. He stressed that the way Sultan fought against the British to protect the country should not be forgotten.
Regarding the issue of the Deputy Mayor displaying Tipu Sultan’s portrait, Azmi stated that there should be no objection to such an act. He accused the government of attempting to divide society by raising historical issues. He referenced the Babri Masjid, questioning who demolished it and how many mosques are currently being destroyed.
Meanwhile, Azmi congratulated the citizens of India on the recent victory in sports, suggesting that Pakistan, which was eager to play matches, has now realized its standing. He called for maintaining peace and mutual harmony in the country.
