Mumbai, September 14 (Daily Kiran) : Abu Azmi, the president of the Maharashtra Samajwadi Party, has strongly defended madrasas against recent claims linking them to terrorism. His remarks came during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, where he emphasized the significant role of scholars from madrasas in India’s freedom struggle.
Responding to BJP leader Dilip Ghosh’s comments, Azmi stated that associating madrasas with terrorism is an affront to the sacrifices made by freedom fighters. He highlighted that during British rule, when gatherings were restricted, the Ganesh festival served as a means for people to unite and participate in the fight for independence.
Azmi pointed out that the British government had seized power from Muslims and that madrasas played a crucial role in resisting colonial rule, a period when the British labeled their efforts as terrorism. He noted that historical records show that leaders, including Mahatma Gandhi, fought alongside these scholars against British oppression, which the colonizers often termed as terrorism.
He criticized those who continue to link madrasas with terrorism, asserting that they lack an understanding of history. According to Azmi, individuals connected to madrasas and mosques are patriots with no ties to terrorism. He urged that those truly linked to such activities should be held accountable, while those who served the British and contributed little to the freedom struggle should be scrutinized instead.
Azmi expressed disappointment with current political discourse, suggesting that if leaders focused on eradicating hunger and promoting education, they would earn public applause. He accused politicians of diverting attention by interjecting religion into politics, asserting that those who do so are not true representatives of good governance.
He concluded by stating that the younger generation is now aware and will support those who work for the common good, while those who resort to deceit in the name of religion will soon find themselves out of power.
On a different note, regarding the BRICS summit, Azmi commented on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s post about vegetarian food, suggesting that guests should have been served according to their preferences. He also stressed the importance of implementing the outcomes of the summit for the country’s development.
