In a related development, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) navy reported that a large oil tanker attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz collided with naval mines, leading to an explosion and subsequent fire on board.
According to a statement from the IRGC’s official news outlet, Sepah News, efforts to extinguish the fire on the super tanker, named El Gaya, were unsuccessful, and the vessel became engulfed in flames.
The navy reiterated warnings about the dangers of using “restricted” or “illegal” routes in the southern part of this crucial maritime passage. The statement also confirmed that the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, with Iranian naval control still in place.
The Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA), responsible for monitoring maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, has issued alerts to insurance companies and registration entities, advising them to avoid providing services to vessels identified as violating regulations. The PGSA warned that such actions could lead to potential repercussions for those involved.
