Srinagar, September 15 (Daily Kiran) : Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah raised concerns on Tuesday regarding the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in BJP-ruled states. He emphasized that such a significant issue should first be addressed at the national level.
Speaking to reporters, Abdullah criticized the BJP’s attempt to enforce the UCC in various states. He argued that laws of national importance should be introduced in Parliament rather than being presented differently in individual states.
“If you have a majority, bring it to Parliament. Why are you doing this in different states?” he questioned. Abdullah pointed out that the UCC cannot be deemed ‘universal’ if it is only enforced in BJP-ruled states. He noted that the BJP does not govern the entire country, and many states and Union Territories are led by other parties.
He also highlighted internal differences within the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), mentioning that some coalition partners are not in favor of implementing the UCC in their states. “Reports indicate that the Janata Dal-United has clearly stated that it will not be implemented in Bihar. If even your own allies are not ready for it, how can you claim it should be applied nationwide?”
Abdullah stressed that such a crucial decision should be made in Parliament, which represents the entire nation. He contended that matters of this nature should not be left to individual states. “The representation of the country lies not in the states but in Parliament. Let the law come to Parliament,” he said.
He further questioned why the government is pushing the UCC through states when other significant legislative proposals have been discussed in Parliament. “Whenever they have talked about laws in Parliament, whether it’s ‘One Nation, One Election’ or reservations, they have not brought them to Parliament. Now, with this, they are also talking about bringing it to states. Bring it to Parliament and see if you can pass it,” he stated.
