Ranchi, March 2: In a significant decision, 23 inmates serving life sentences in various prisons across Jharkhand will be released today. This announcement was made during the 36th meeting of the Jharkhand State Sentence Review Board, chaired by Chief Minister Hemant Soren at his residential office on Kanke Road.
The meeting also outlined special arrangements for the social rehabilitation, income generation, and monitoring of the released inmates. Alongside new cases recommended by the board, a thorough review of 34 proposals that were rejected in previous meetings was conducted.
After detailed discussions, the Chief Minister agreed to the release of the 23 prisoners. The decision took into account orders from relevant courts, reports from district superintendents of police, jail superintendents, and probation officers, as well as the nature of the crimes committed, ensuring that the release aligns with judicial norms and social safety standards.
The Chief Minister directed officials to prepare a comprehensive database of the released inmates, verifying their social, economic, and family backgrounds. He emphasized that reintegrating them into society is the state’s responsibility. This includes linking them to government welfare schemes, involving them in skill development programs, and formulating plans to provide sustainable income sources.
Additionally, the meeting instructed that coordinators at the district level be designated to regularly monitor the rehabilitation of the released inmates. The Inspector General of Prisons and Correctional Services was tasked with maintaining a track record of the released prisoners and ensuring that district police superintendents monitor their activities.
The Chief Minister also suggested launching awareness campaigns through women’s self-help groups, particularly for those who were imprisoned in cases related to witchcraft accusations, to help dispel social prejudices.
Present at the meeting were Chief Secretary Avinash Kumar, Principal Secretary of Home, Prisons, and Disaster Management Vandana Dadhel, Director General of Police Tadasha Mishra, Principal Secretary of the Law Department Neeraj Kumar Srivastava, Inspector General of Prisons and Correctional Services Surdashan Prasad Mandal, and other senior officials.
