Washington, July 29: U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Iran is “very eager” to reach an agreement with Washington and has essentially accepted that it cannot possess nuclear weapons. However, he warned that if negotiations fail, U.S. forces may resume military action.
Trump made these remarks during a virtual campaign rally for Republican Congressman Andy Ogles and in a separate interview with Fox News.
Speaking to voters in Tennessee, Trump said, “They (Iran) will never have nuclear weapons, and they understand this. We have put tremendous pressure on them, and they want to make a deal.”
In his Fox News interview, Trump mentioned that there have been some very good discussions between the U.S. and Iran. He dismissed Iranian statements claiming that no discussions on nuclear matters were taking place.
He explained, “Sometimes we are in the middle of a very good discussion, and they come out and say that we are not talking or that we have not discussed nuclear issues, while we have only discussed that because they will never have nuclear weapons; they understand this.”
Trump asserted that Iran has actually conceded to U.S. demands but has yet to officially confirm this.
“I just want them to not have nuclear weapons, that’s all. They have essentially agreed to this; we just need to get them to make it official,” he added.
The President emphasized that he prefers an agreement over further military action. However, he warned that if Tehran refuses to negotiate, the U.S. will launch significant attacks on Iran’s bridges, power plants, and other infrastructure.
Trump stated, “If they do not agree, I will go back and finish the job.”
He also warned that the U.S. could attack ‘Pickax Mountain,’ where reports suggest Iran is engaged in construction and fortification activities.
“We had destroyed their nuclear sites, and if there is no agreement, we will have to destroy ‘Pickax’ as well. If no deal is reached, we will easily destroy it,” he said.
Trump noted that the U.S. military controls the Strait of Hormuz, allowing only select ships to pass. After a framework for an agreement was established, Washington eased its blockade, but it was reinstated after Iran violated the deal.
He remarked, “Only those ships that we want to pass can do so. Our blockade is so strong that no one can get through.”
It is important to note that a nuclear agreement was reached in 2015 between Iran and six major powers, which aimed to halt Tehran’s nuclear program in exchange for relief from sanctions. Trump withdrew the U.S. from that agreement during his first term in 2018.
