New Delhi, July 29: Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has urged the Union Minister for Rural Development and Agriculture, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, to provide 1,156,915 homes under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G). The Chief Minister emphasized that since the current government took office, it has prioritized housing for the poor.
During a meeting at the Agriculture Building on Tuesday, the Chief Minister shared details about the ‘Indiramma House’ initiative aimed at aiding the underprivileged. He pointed out that the previous government failed to utilize the PMAY-G scheme effectively, leading to a surge in housing demand. Millions of impoverished individuals have been homeless for the past decade.
The state government conducted a survey using the ‘Housing Plus’ app, developed by the Ministry of Rural Development, identifying 1,156,915 eligible rural families. The Chief Minister requested the central minister to expedite the provision of homes to Telangana.
In light of El Niño conditions, CM Revanth Reddy also requested the inclusion of additional work under the ‘Vikas Bharat Guarantee’ (VB-G-RAM-G) for the Employment and Livelihood Mission (Rural). He highlighted that expanding this scheme would enhance the livelihoods of SC, ST, small and marginal farmers, and agricultural laborers, particularly those struggling due to insufficient rainfall.
He urged Chouhan to incorporate activities such as creating vegetable trellises on farmers’ land, establishing fodder fields, cultivating mulberry, setting up sheds for silkworm rearing, kitchen gardens for leafy vegetables, and bamboo plantations. The Chief Minister stressed the immediate need to include projects for water retention on hilly slopes, moisture conservation in existing orchards and gardens, and restoring land affected by floods and sand deposition.
He noted that beneficiaries of the ‘Indiramma’ houses under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) are provided with work opportunities for 90 days during the construction process. Given the increased demand for work, he appealed to the central minister for approval to include more projects under the VB-G-RAM-G scheme. The meeting also discussed incorporating other proposed projects by the state government to meet local needs.
Present at the meeting were MPs Dr. Mallu Ravi, Vem Narendra Reddy, Porika Balram Naik, Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy, Ramasahayam Raghuram Reddy, Suresh Shetkhar, Gaddam Vamshi Krishna, and M. Anil Kumar Yadav, along with the Chief Minister’s advisor Ramakrishna Rao and Secretary (Coordination) Advait Kumar Singh.
