David Warners Captaincy in Jeopardy After DUI Allegations in Sydney

New Delhi, April 15: Veteran opener David Warner’s future as captain of Sydney Thunder is under scrutiny following allegations of driving under the influence in Sydney.

Warner, one of Australia’s most successful batsmen, was stopped in the eastern suburbs on Easter Sunday. Reports indicate that his blood alcohol level was recorded at 0.104, more than double the legal limit. He was taken to Maroubra Police Station for further investigation and is scheduled to appear in Downing Centre Local Court on May 7.

As a key leader in the Sydney Thunder team, Warner’s situation poses a challenge for Cricket NSW, which has long been active in promoting road safety initiatives.

Cricket NSW CEO Lee German acknowledged the seriousness of the incident but refrained from commenting in detail due to ongoing legal proceedings. The 39-year-old batsman retired from Test cricket in 2024.

According to ‘The West Australian,’ German stated, “I cannot say much about this incident as it falls under legal jurisdiction. These allegations are concerning, and we take them very seriously. At Cricket NSW, we are strong advocates for safe driving, not for driving under the influence. We make our players very aware of this issue. We will support David throughout this process, knowing that he has a court case pending, while also striving to raise awareness among our players on this critical issue.”

Cricket NSW and the Thunder team have been actively involved in promoting road safety awareness, including their annual match against Brisbane Heat, known as the ‘Road Safety Cup.’ This initiative is a significant campaign conducted in collaboration with government agencies.

As the legal process unfolds, Warner’s leadership position remains uncertain. Cricket NSW is expected to carefully evaluate the situation in the coming weeks.

German emphasized, “It is important to remember that these are just allegations at this stage. A decision regarding Sydney Thunder’s captaincy will be made at the appropriate time.” He also stressed Cricket NSW’s commitment to working closely with its partners, including Transport for NSW, to effectively address this situation.

He added, “We are collaborating closely. Transport for NSW has been our sponsor for a long time. They are a very important partner, and we are in discussions with them. We know they will look to us for leadership on this specific issue and case. We are fully prepared to do so. This partnership is significant for us, and we wish to continue it.”
