14 Arrested for Disposing Non-Vegetarian Food in the Ganges

New Delhi, March 17: In Varanasi, a video showing individuals having an iftar party on a boat in the Ganges has gone viral on social media. The footage allegedly depicts people throwing leftover non-vegetarian food into the river. Following complaints, police have arrested 14 individuals involved in the incident.

The video claims that the group consumed meat dishes and discarded the remnants into the Ganges, which is considered sacred by millions who come to worship and bathe in its waters.

The footage has been widely shared on platforms like Instagram, showing a small boat at sunset where people are seen eating chicken biryani and other dishes.

After a complaint from a leader of the BJP’s youth wing, the Kotwali police registered a case against those involved and the boat operator. Charges include hurting religious sentiments, causing pollution, and public disturbance.

So far, 14 individuals have been taken into custody. Police stated that the investigation is ongoing, and they are working to verify the video’s authenticity while attempting to identify other individuals seen in the footage.

Speaking to reporters, ACP Vijay Pratap Singh from Kotwali said, “We received information about a video going viral on Instagram. In it, some people were having an iftar party on a boat, eating food and throwing bones into the river. A pot containing chicken biryani was placed in the middle of the boat, and everyone was eating from it. Subsequently, 14 people were arrested.”

Authorities emphasized that no one is above the law. Strict action will be taken against those who pollute or violate public regulations. They also mentioned that police are now closely monitoring boats on the river and ghats to prevent such incidents from occurring again.

This incident has reignited discussions on the importance of respecting religious sentiments and maintaining cleanliness in public spaces, particularly in cities like Varanasi, where religion and tourism are both significant.
