Fake news a tool of information warfare: DGP

Addressing the workshop, Director General of Police Rajeev Sharma said that in today’s era, old incidents are often shared as new and reach millions of people within seconds. He expressed concern about misinformation being used as a tool of information warfare, leading to challenges such as disruption of law and order, mental harassment, and financial fraud.

He added that the country has over 9 million internet users, with around 34% active on social media, where misinformation frequently spreads unchecked. Sharma stressed the need for greater awareness especially among youth aged 18 to 24.

Appeal to media for responsible reporting

The DGP urged media professionals to prioritise fact-checking over the rush for breaking news, warning that even a single misleading report can cause serious harm. He called for collaboration between media and police, along with the use of technology to curb false propaganda and ensure accurate information reaches citizens. According to him, technology should be used positively and responsibly.

Senior officials, experts participate

The workshop was attended by journalists and social media influencers. A team of around 10 experts from ISB, including senior faculty member Professor Manish Gangwar and Major Vineet Kumar, trained participants on the use of AI tools to detect deepfakes.

Senior police officials including DGP (Cyber Crime & Law and Order) Sanjay Agarwal, Director of Rajasthan Police Academy and ADGP Sanjeeb Narzary, ADGP (Cyber Crime) V.K. Singh, IG Ajay Pal Lamba, DIG Kunwar Rashtradeep, SP Rashi Dogra and Shantanu Singh were present on the occasion.
