Agartala, April 26: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha stated on Saturday that opposition parties have wronged women by opposing the Women’s Reservation Bill, labeling such a stance as unacceptable. He asserted that women across the country will respond decisively to the opposition in the future.
Saha made these remarks while participating in the ‘Janakrosh Women’s March’ organized by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in Agartala. The march was held on April 17 to protest the failure to pass amendments related to the Women’s Reservation Bill.
Speaking to the media, the Chief Minister condemned the opposition’s actions and urged everyone to support the proposal set to be presented in the state assembly on April 30. He noted that the Nari Shakti Bandhan Act, 2023, has already become law.
He further explained that once a law is enacted, amendments are often necessary, and it has been observed that some areas require changes during this process. This is why the bill has been reintroduced in Parliament, specifically to empower women.
Saha mentioned that the bill was resubmitted for amendment in Parliament in April 2026. He pointed out that a significant issue is the potential delay in its implementation. It has been stated that the bill cannot be enacted until the census is completed, which is currently underway.
Consequently, he indicated that there may be a long wait ahead; hence, the bill has been brought back for amendment. He expressed that Prime Minister Modi is eager to advance this bill, as it was passed after extensive discussions.
In this context, he noted that some changes have been proposed based on the 2011 census. However, Saha reported that the opposition coalition, including Congress, Trinamool Congress, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), and other regional parties, has opposed this initiative.
He added that women have taken to the streets in protest, organizing marches, and they will continue to raise their voices in the coming days.
The event was attended by several senior leaders, including BJP state president and Rajya Sabha MP Rajiv Bhattacharya, Women’s Wing president Mimi Majumdar, Chief Whip Kalpana Saha Roy, MLA Antara Deb Sarkar, and many other party leaders.
