New Delhi, June 27: West Bengal Chief Minister Swapan Debnath has emphasized that delivering justice for Tamanna Khatun, a minor girl murdered during political violence, is a top priority. He assured the public that the government is committed to fulfilling this promise.
In a post on the social media platform X, Debnath reiterated that justice for Tamanna is paramount. He commended the Krishna Nagar district police for their swift and lawful actions in this case, expressing satisfaction with their efforts. Following a meeting with Tamanna’s grieving mother, the police accelerated their actions to ensure that the perpetrators receive the harshest penalties.
The Chief Minister expressed his pleasure in informing the people of West Bengal that nearly all suspects named in the FIR have been apprehended. In recent days, law enforcement has captured 12 additional individuals while pursuing leads in locations such as Gurgaon and Nagpur.
The arrested suspects have been identified as Ziarul Sheikh, Sabir Sheikh, Fakhar Sheikh alias Ismail Sheikh, Hafizul Sheikh, Minarul Sheikh, Anisur Sheikh, Milan Sheikh, Rajabul Sheikh, Zakat Sheikh, Sahibul Sheikh, Amirul Sheikh, and Rakibul Sheikh.
Debnath stated that this rapid response sends a clear message. Unlike the previous government, which often identified criminals based on their political affiliations, our administration operates differently. We are firmly committed to establishing the rule of law and completely eradicating the dark era when the law favored the powerful.
He emphasized that crime is crime, and actions will be taken fairly, promptly, and without fear or bias, regardless of the identities of the victim or the accused. Tamanna Khatun lost her life during the violence that erupted following the announcement of the Kaliganj assembly by-election results on June 23, 2025, in which Trinamool Congress candidate Alifa Ahmed won by a significant margin.
During the victory procession, some Trinamool Congress supporters threw crude bombs at Tamanna’s home, resulting in her immediate death. Recently, Chief Minister Swapan Debnath met with Tamanna’s mother and assured her of justice.
