Kolkata, June 27: The troubles for former Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) Mayor and West Bengal government minister Firhad Hakim are escalating. Minister Agnimitra Paul has demanded Hakim’s arrest in connection with the Taratala warehouse incident.
During a media interaction in Asansol, Paul stated that several arrests have already been made in this case. Individuals ranging from architects to engineers, as well as the previous government’s officer on special duty, Kalicharan, have been detained. Paul emphasized that the mayor should also face arrest. An FIR has been filed today, and several documents bearing Hakim’s signature have been uncovered. It is implausible that he was unaware of these matters.
The minister asserted that strict action will be taken against those causing damage to government property. He warned, “In many past incidents, government property was harmed without consequences. This will no longer be tolerated. If anyone damages government property, the government will recover damages from their assets.”
Paul also mentioned two upcoming bills, including the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill, aimed at ensuring equal rights and justice for all citizens.
Recently, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari revealed that the warehouse construction plan was approved on January 17, with signatures from Hakim and the KMC engineers responsible for the project.
The Chief Minister stated that the previous Trinamool Congress government had turned the ‘City of Joy’ into a ‘City of Death’ through rampant corruption and extortion. He remarked, “This is the consequence of your sins. You have learned nothing from past incidents of building collapses. The approved plans bear the former mayor’s signature. No one will be spared.”
The death toll from this incident has now risen to 16, with many others rescued.
