Santiago, August 5: Goalkeeper Wojinha, who delivered an unforgettable performance for Cape Verde in the FIFA World Cup 2026, has officially joined the Chilean club Colo-Colo. His arrival was celebrated with a grand welcome from fans.
Wojinha was voted the best goalkeeper of the FIFA World Cup 2026, gaining significant attention for his outstanding play. After parting ways with the Portuguese second-division team Chaves in June, he entered the transfer market as a free agent. The 40-year-old goalkeeper successfully passed a medical test before completing the paperwork at Colo-Colo’s Santiago headquarters.
Although the announcement of his signing was made in July, delays due to visa issues and personal matters postponed his joining the club. According to Xinhua, Wojinha, whose full name is Josimar José Evora Dias, was introduced at a press conference in front of dozens of media representatives at Santiago’s Monumental David Arellano Stadium.
“I expected something big because we are talking about Colo-Colo, a club with a great history, but I didn’t expect so many people. I am happy to meet so many fans. I want to thank the whole world, God, and everyone,” he expressed. Recently playing for Portugal’s second division team G.D. Chaves, Wojinha stated he is content with his life despite the events following the World Cup.
“I started playing professionally at 25. I come from a very small country where opportunities are scarce, almost nonexistent. I represent the people of Cape Verde, who work hard and never give up. For me, representing this country is very rewarding,” he added.
Colo-Colo finalized Wojinha’s signing for the remainder of the 2026 domestic season on Monday. As Chile’s most successful club and the only Copa Libertadores champion, having won the prestigious tournament in 1991, Colo-Colo currently leads the Chilean Primera Division with 42 points from 17 matches, 12 points ahead of second-placed Universidad de Chile.
