Ohio, August 5: World number 2 tennis player Carlos Alcaraz will not participate in the Cincinnati Open. The Spanish athlete has been unable to recover from a wrist injury, prompting him to withdraw from the tournament.
The tournament organizers confirmed Alcaraz’s withdrawal on Wednesday. They stated, “Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from the Cincinnati Open. We wish our 2025 champion a speedy recovery and look forward to welcoming him next year.” Alcaraz last competed in the Barcelona Open in April and reached the finals of the Monte-Carlo Masters earlier that month. According to the ATP Win/Loss Index, the 23-year-old has a record of 22-3 this season and holds the second spot in the ATP rankings.
Alcaraz began the season strongly, winning the Australian Open and completing his career Grand Slam. The trophy from Melbourne was the last major title he needed. The main draw of the Cincinnati Open will commence on August 13 and run until August 23. In May, Alcaraz withdrew from both Wimbledon and the Queen’s Club Championship due to ongoing issues with his right wrist. He also missed the Italian Open and the French Open. Last season, Alcaraz claimed the French Open title by defeating Jannik Sinner in the finals.
Earlier this year, Alcaraz received the “Sportsman of the Year” award at the Laureus Awards. During the event, he was seen wearing a brace on his right wrist, raising further concerns about his future participation in tournaments. Alcaraz later confirmed that he had to stay away from competition to prevent aggravating his injury, as advised by medical professionals.
