Getafe Signs Georgian Center-Back Saba Sazonov for 2026-27 Season

Madrid, August 5: Getafe has officially signed Georgian international center-back Saba Sazonov for the 2026-27 season. The club confirmed the signing on Tuesday. The 24-year-old player joins on a free transfer and has signed a contract until June 2027, with an option for an additional year.

Sazonov began his career at Zenit St. Petersburg and has also played for Dynamo Moscow and Italy’s Torino FC, where he made 13 first-team appearances. However, he has spent limited time on the pitch due to a knee ligament injury. In the past two years, Sazonov has played only two minutes of first-team football. According to Spanish sports daily Marca, he was close to joining Getafe last season, but a paperwork error at the last moment prevented the deal from going through.

As reported by Xinhua, Getafe has strengthened its squad further by signing right-back Andres Garcia on loan from Aston Villa, just a month before the new La Liga season begins. The 23-year-old Spanish player has made only 18 first-team appearances for the Premier League club since joining from Levante in January 2025. He will help fill the gap left by Juan Iglesias, who transferred to Sevilla on a free transfer at the end of June.

Despite a strong performance in the second half of last season, Getafe narrowly missed out on European qualification. This summer, the team has lost several key players, including midfielders Luis Mila and Mauro Arambarri, as well as defender Domingos Duarte and Iglesias.

Previously, after leading the club to European competition last season, coach Jose Bordalas signed a new contract with Getafe. Despite uncertainties regarding his future due to difficulties in negotiations with club president Angel Torres, the 64-year-old coach has secured a two-year deal that will keep him at the club until the end of June 2028.
