Colombo, August 5: Former Indian fast bowler Zaheer Khan has joined as a co-owner of the Jaffna Kings, the most successful franchise in the Lanka Premier League (LPL). This acquisition was completed by the Stockholm-based global sports ownership group, Anchor Sports AB. Following this acquisition, the franchise has officially been renamed “Anchor Jaffna Kings.”
Zaheer partners with Nagendra Siddutham, the owner of Anchor Sports. He brings decades of international experience to the LPL, joining a franchise that has set a benchmark in the competition. The team has claimed four titles out of five seasons so far and remains a strong contender this season. Under the captaincy of Bhanuka Rajapaksa, the team has achieved four wins in six matches, placing them among the top two teams in the points table.
Zaheer Khan expressed his excitement, stating, “I have always appreciated the talent, innovation, and diversity of bowling talent emerging from Sri Lanka. This is a country where I have played and have many fond memories. Being part of Sri Lankan cricket as a team owner is truly exciting for me, and I am eager to start working with Anchor Jaffna Kings.”
This acquisition further expands Anchor Sports’ international portfolio, which already includes men’s and women’s teams like the Antwerp Anchors in the European T20 Premier League and the Vancouver Anchors in Canada’s Super 60 League.
Nagendra Siddutham, owner of Anchor Sports, remarked, “This is a significant step for us. Sri Lanka has a rich cricketing heritage, and the LPL has quickly established itself as a well-run and competitive league. The Jaffna Anchors will be a natural extension of what we are building on a global level. We are excited to invest in Jaffna Anchors and contribute to the league’s ongoing development.”
