Kolkata, February 18: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed pride in the international recognition of a significant community initiative in the state. She shared this news on the social media platform ‘X’.

Mamata Banerjee wrote, “I am proud to announce that the United Nations has once again recognized our initiative. The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization has awarded us an International Level Valued Certificate for our innovative ‘Matiir Srishti’ program, which we launched in 2020 in our drought-affected western districts.”

She noted that this honor is awarded as an outstanding community initiative in the category of natural heritage and biodiversity conservation. The program aims to revive barren, unproductive, and single-crop dependent land, making it suitable for multi-crop farming, horticulture, and vegetable production. A coordinated development model was created under this initiative, integrating land reform, irrigation, and strategies at the panchayat level.

Mamata Banerjee also mentioned that new ponds and other water sources were constructed under the program, and irrigation facilities were expanded. This not only increased the area of arable land but also provided employment opportunities for millions of rural residents. Many families have seen a significant rise in their incomes, strengthening the rural economy.

The Chief Minister further informed that the FAO has recognized West Bengal’s renowned aromatic rice varieties, Gobindabhog, Tulai Piyaji, and Kanakchur, as part of its food and cultural heritage. This recognition is a testament to the hard work of the state’s farmers and rural communities. The acknowledgment from the UN-FAO is a significant honor for the commendable efforts recognized globally in preserving natural heritage, biodiversity, and food and cultural legacies.

Mamata Banerjee dedicated this achievement to the entire rural community, especially the farmers of Bengal, stating that this international recognition is a global acknowledgment of the state’s efforts towards sustainable development and environmental conservation.
