West Bengal Welcomes New Governor R.N. Ravi with a Message from CM Mamata Banerjee

Kolkata, March 12: Former Intelligence Bureau (IB) chief and former Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi took the oath as the 22nd Governor of West Bengal on Thursday. After the swearing-in ceremony, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee conveyed her first message to him: “Bengal loves those who love Bengal.”

Following the ceremony, the Chief Minister welcomed the new Governor by draping him with a traditional shawl. During their conversation, she emphasized the importance of mutual respect and love for the state.

The Chief Minister stated, “Bengal respects people from all linguistic backgrounds. Everyone lives peacefully here. However, it is essential to note that Bengal loves those who love Bengal. This is a unique trait of the Bengali people.”

In response, the Governor acknowledged, “It is true that West Bengal is the intellectual and cultural capital of India.”

Political analysts believe that the statement, “Bengal loves those who love Bengal,” carries a significant message from the Chief Minister to the new Governor. A political expert from the city remarked, “The message implies that a good relationship between the State Secretariat and the Governor’s House can only be established if the Governor’s House does not engage in actions against the interests of the state or the state government. This message is crucial, especially given the longstanding tensions between the Governor’s House and the State Secretariat during the current Trinamool Congress regime. This tension began during Jagdeep Dhankhar’s tenure, who later became the Vice President of India, and continued during the term of C.V. Anand Bose, who preceded Ravi.”

Ravi replaces C.V. Anand Bose, who unexpectedly resigned from his position on the evening of March 5, shortly before Ravi’s appointment was announced. Ravi arrived in Kolkata on Wednesday, while Bose returned to his hometown in Kerala.

Ravi is the second IB super-cop to take the oath as the Governor of West Bengal in the last fifteen years. Before him, former IB chief and former National Security Advisor (NSA) M.K. Narayanan took the oath as Governor before the significant 2011 assembly elections that ended the 34-year-long Left Front rule and marked the beginning of Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress leadership.
