Kolkata, August 27: The All India Fair Price Shop Dealers Federation has submitted a proposal to the West Bengal government aimed at transforming the state’s Public Distribution System (PDS) shops into multi-service centers. This initiative seeks to mitigate the soaring prices of essential goods in the market.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Minister, the federation’s national secretary, Biswambhar Basu, suggested that ration shops should also provide medicines, unsubsidized 5 kg gas cylinders, and other necessary items.
Basu claimed that converting PDS shops into multi-service centers would enable the delivery of essential goods and services at lower prices, even in remote areas.
The letter highlighted that recent floods and rapid price increases have created hardships for the common people. The federation expressed its readiness to assist the government in curbing price hikes. They believe that leveraging the extensive network of ration dealers could enhance public services.
The first proposal includes making additional rice and wheat available to the public at relatively lower prices under the central government’s “Tide-Over Allocation” scheme.
Additionally, the federation proposed establishing “Prime Minister’s Public Nutrition Centers” and “Prime Minister’s Jan Aushadhi Centers” at ration shops. They believe this would provide affordable access to food and other essential services.
Moreover, the federation has requested permission to sell unsubsidized 5 kg gas cylinders and everyday necessities through PDS shops. They assert that if such a diverse range of products is offered, ration dealers can play a significant role in the distribution process.
The letter also stated that ration dealers are prepared to collaborate with relevant authorities and central agencies to develop an effective distribution framework if given the opportunity.
The federation emphasized that, under current conditions, ration dealers prioritize meeting state needs and providing proper services to the public over commercial profits.
They have urged the Chief Minister to convene a high-level meeting immediately, chaired by the state’s Food Minister, Ashok Kirtania, to discuss this matter.
