Jamnagars Traditional Garba Celebrates 37 Years of Charan Culture During Navratri

Jamnagars unique Garba tradition, celebrating 37 years, showcases the Charan communitys rich cultural heritage during Navratri.

Jamnagar, October 15 (Daily Kiran) : As the vibrant colors of modern Garba celebrations light up the country during Navratri, the Charan community in Jamnagar stands out by preserving its cultural heritage for 37 years. Organized by the Shri Sonal Mata Navratri Committee and the Sonal Garbi Mandal, this Garba is more than just a dance; it symbolizes the cultural identity and devotion of the Charan community.

The Garba in Jamnagar is distinct due to its unique traditions. Young women perform the ‘Trishul Ras,’ a representation of divine power, while men energetically participate in the renowned ‘Maniyaro Ras.’ Traditional devotional songs and folk music, accompanied by the beats of drums, attract a large number of devotees.

Vijaya Alabhai Khelia, who participated in the ‘Trishul Ras’ on Wednesday night, shared her experience: “We play a completely traditional Garba here, and our attire is also unique. While others may dance in modern styles, we adhere to our centuries-old tradition. When we dance with the trident in hand, it feels divine, as if Goddess Jagdamba herself is among us.”

Karna Garhvi, an organizer from the Sonal Garbi Mandal, highlighted the significance of this Garba: “The most remarkable feature is that our young women perform the traditional Charan dance, ‘Trishul Ras.’ It is believed that when Goddess Jagdamba vanquished demons, she wielded her trident. Whenever the deities faced crises, they prayed to the Goddess, who came to their aid, destroying all evil. We worship that embodiment of power through this Ras.”

He emphasized the goal of maintaining this tradition is to connect the younger generation with their roots. In the rush of modernity, there is a risk of losing our folk culture. Thus, this effort, which began 37 years ago, continues with the same devotion and discipline today.
