Baruipur, September 3 (Daily Kiran) : West Bengal police announced on September 3 that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has filed its first chargesheet in the rape and murder of a minor girl in Baruipur, South 24 Parganas district. This development comes exactly 60 days after the tragic incident, which occurred on July 4.
The victim was reported missing on the afternoon of July 4, and her body was discovered the following morning in a pond located in the Suryapur area, under the jurisdiction of the Baruipur police station. The crime is believed to have taken place between the night of July 4 and the early hours of July 5.
The shocking nature of this case has stirred significant unrest across the state. In response, the state government established the SIT to ensure a thorough investigation.
Four individuals have been arrested in connection with the case. One of the suspects, Prabhas Mandal, was killed in a police encounter while allegedly attempting to flee after trying to seize a weapon from an officer.
The post-mortem report indicated that the victim was alive when she was wrapped in a sack and discarded into the pond. The autopsy revealed severe injuries to her private parts and head. The cause of death was determined to be excessive blood loss and drowning.
According to police sources, the 702-page chargesheet includes multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, 2023, against the accused. Charges include kidnapping (Section 137(2)), wrongful confinement (Section 140(3)), and rape of a minor (Section 65(1)). Additionally, it cites gang rape of a minor (Section 70(2)), murder (Section 103(1)), destruction of evidence (Section 238), and criminal conspiracy (Section 61).
The chargesheet also invokes provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, particularly Section 6, which addresses severe sexual assault against children.
