Kathmandu, September 3 (Daily Kiran) : The devastating floods in Nepal have resulted in significant loss of life, with the death toll reaching 1,252 by Thursday afternoon. Additionally, 4,216 individuals remain unaccounted for. Amid this crisis, Indian Ambassador Naveen Srivastava visited the Indian technical team stationed near Chhilime in Syabrubesi.
On social media platform X, Ambassador Srivastava shared a photo from his visit, highlighting the ongoing rescue operations. He noted that the technical team is excavating the Chhilime Powerhouse tunnel as part of their efforts. Working alongside the Nepalese Army, the Indian team has already conducted a search extending 100 meters into the tunnel using specialized equipment.
Ambassador Srivastava indicated plans to bring in heavier machinery to advance further into the tunnel. He described the challenging swampy terrain and difficult conditions faced by both Indian and Nepalese teams, who continue their work tirelessly despite the obstacles.
According to data released by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) on Thursday, the number of confirmed deaths has reached 1,252, with 4,216 people still missing. Reports from the Kathmandu Post reveal that the highest number of fatalities occurred in Chitwan, where 355 bodies have been recovered. This is followed by Nawalparasi East with 218 deaths, Nawalparasi West with 208, and Nuwakot with 177. The disaster originated in Rasuwa, which has recorded 127 fatalities. Additionally, bodies have also been discovered in Gorkha, Dhading, and Tanahun districts.
Only 95 of the deceased have been identified, and those identified have been handed over to their families. The Kathmandu Post further reports that relief and rescue operations are ongoing, with thousands still missing, including foreign nationals and employees from hydropower projects, security personnel, and government officials.
Authorities revealed that nearly 900 employees from hydropower projects are among the missing. As more information becomes available from the affected areas and reports are verified, the number of missing individuals may change.
