Kolkata, March 15: Just hours before the formal announcement of assembly elections in West Bengal, the state government executed a significant reshuffle of police officials on Sunday.
According to a senior official from the state government, 27 inspectors and 12 in-charge officers (ICs) of police stations have been transferred.
Several inspectors from the Diamond Harbour police district have been reassigned. Additionally, ICs from Bidhannagar, Barrackpore, and Chandannagar police commissionerates have also been transferred. Inspectors from East Midnapore district have undergone similar changes.
A notification regarding these changes was issued by the state police department just before the election schedule was announced.
The transfer directive explicitly states that the concerned officials must assume their new positions as soon as possible in various districts, including North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Jalpaiguri, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, South Dinajpur, and Hooghly.
The main opposition party, BJP, has raised questions about these transfers. BJP leader Sajal Ghosh stated, “They have made these transfers in advance so that the Election Commission cannot make any changes later. We have anticipated this move from the beginning. However, there is no written indication that the Election Commission is prohibited from transferring these officials later. Their professional history and work experience are under thorough review. If necessary, the Election Commission will examine these details.”
It is noteworthy that the state government had already reshuffled the state police force three weeks ago, during which four IPS officers were transferred.
