West Bengal Election: Up to 9 Million Voter Names Likely to be Removed Post-Judicial Process

Kolkata, March 31: The Election Commission has projected that the total number of voter names removed during the process categorized under “logical discrepancies” may approach 9 million by the end of the procedure.

An insider from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal explained on Tuesday that as of the final voter list published on February 28, a total of 6,366,952 names had already been removed. These names primarily fell under categories of “deceased,” “moved,” “missing,” and “duplicate” voters.

The insider further noted that the final voter list did not include 6,067,675 cases that were sent for judicial review. It was found that in resolved cases, names were being removed in approximately 40 to 45 percent of instances. Based on this average daily removal rate, it is estimated that the total number of names removed will be around 9 million.

This estimated figure is based on the average daily rate of name removals during the judicial decision process. Voters whose names are removed will have the opportunity to appeal in one of the 19 appellate tribunals established for this purpose.

As of Monday night, the judicial decision process for about 1.6 million voters has not yet been completed, but the Commission is confident that it will conclude within this week.

Currently, over 700 judicial officers, including 100 from neighboring states Odisha and Jharkhand, are engaged in this decision-making process and are working around the clock to expedite it.

The assembly elections in West Bengal will take place in two phases on April 23 and April 29. Voting will occur in 152 assembly constituencies in the first phase and 142 seats in the second phase. Results will be announced on May 4. The nomination process began following the notification issued by the Election Commission on Monday.
