Patna, April 7: In a significant drug bust, Patna police seized a large quantity of illegal codeine-containing cough syrup on Monday in the Ramkrishna Nagar area. This operation comes amid ongoing concerns from the opposition regarding the rise of substance abuse following the state’s liquor ban.
Police received a tip-off about a truck unloading codeine cough syrup in the Zakariyapur area of Ramkrishna Nagar. In response, a special raid team was formed under the direction of the East Patna Superintendent of Police, in collaboration with the Drug Inspector of Patna.
The team acted swiftly, conducting a raid at the specified location. They recovered 30,000 bottles of a cough syrup named ‘S-Cough,’ stored in 200 cartons, totaling approximately 3,000 liters. The police also seized the container involved in the operation.
According to East Patna Superintendent of Police Parichay Kumar, the seized cough syrup was manufactured in Himachal Pradesh. It was booked for transport from Chennai. The police have identified the individual under whose name it was booked, and verification is currently underway. A suspect named Mohammad Jamshed, a resident of Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh, has been arrested in connection with the case.
Kumar stated that the arrested individual is being interrogated but has limited information. The police are continuing their investigation into the broader network involved in this illegal operation.
Notably, just six days prior, police had conducted a major operation against the illegal drug trade in the Gaurichak area, seizing 12,050 bottles of codeine cough syrup and arresting four traffickers, while one suspect managed to escape.
