Bengal Elections: Police Officer Suspended for Alleged Bias During Nomination Process

Kolkata, April 7: The Election Commission has suspended the officer in charge of the Nahati police station in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. This decision comes amid allegations that the officer played a biased role during the nomination process.

Reports indicate that the officer escorted the chairman of the Nahati municipality to the SDO office during the nominations. An insider from the Election Commission confirmed this information on Monday.

The action was prompted by BJP leader Arjun Singh, who highlighted the incident and shared a video on social media, urging the poll panel to take action. In his post, Singh tagged the Election Commission, stating that while the commission is striving for fairness from the West Bengal police, old habits die hard. He noted that the chairman of Nahati municipality and TMC leader Ashok Chatterjee were seen disembarking from a police vehicle at the SDO office in Barrackpore.

Singh further stated that Minister Chatterjee was present to assist with the nomination of the TMC candidate from Nahati. He called for the Election Commission and the CEO of West Bengal to address the misuse of police vehicles by TMC leaders and demanded necessary action.

This is not the first instance of police officers being suspended by the Election Commission for negligence during the assembly elections in West Bengal. Just last week, four Kolkata police personnel were suspended following a disturbance during a roadshow before BJP candidate Suvendu Adhikari’s nomination in the Bhawanipur assembly constituency, which occurred in the presence of Home Minister Amit Shah.
