West Bengal Chief Minister to Review Fencing Progress at India-Bangladesh Border

Kolkata, June 12: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari will lead an administrative review meeting on Friday to discuss several critical issues related to the border. The meeting will focus on the districts of Malda, Murshidabad, North Dinajpur, and South Dinajpur, all of which share boundaries with Bangladesh.

According to sources at the Nabanna state secretariat, the meeting will assess the progress of land allocation to the Border Security Force (BSF) for fencing purposes. Additionally, the coordination between state police and the BSF to prevent illegal immigration from Bangladesh will also be a topic of discussion.

Furthermore, the meeting will address flood control measures in Malda and Murshidabad ahead of the monsoon season. Both districts have long-standing issues with riverbank erosion, resulting in significant property damage each year.

Last month, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari prioritized the allocation of land for fencing along unfenced borders, initiating the official process on May 20, which involved 27 kilometers of land.

India shares a total international border of 4,096.7 kilometers with Bangladesh, of which over 2,000 kilometers is in West Bengal. Approximately 1,600 kilometers of this border is already secured with barbed wire fencing, while around 400 kilometers remains unfenced.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has repeatedly claimed that the previous Trinamool Congress government, led by Mamata Banerjee, deliberately delayed the land allocation process to facilitate illegal immigration from Bangladesh, ensuring participation in their ‘dedicated’ voter bank.

Recently, the state government decided not to present illegal immigrants caught within the state borders in courts. Instead, they will be sent to holding centers and then dispatched to BSF border outposts for repatriation to Bangladesh.
