
Chennai, September 6 (Daily Kiran) : Water released from the Mettur Dam has reached Kallanai in Tiruchi district, paving the way for irrigation in the Kaveri Delta. This significant event is set to take place on Sunday.
On September 1, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay opened the Mettur Dam to supply water to Kaveri-irrigated areas. Initially, 5,000 cubic feet per second was released, which was later increased to 7,000 cubic feet as officials monitored the flow and assessed farmers’ needs in the delta districts. The water arrived at Kallanai after passing through the Mukkombu regulator in Tiruchi district. However, the inflow was lower than expected, preventing the structure from being fully filled by evening. Water accumulated near the sluice gates leading to the Kaveri, Vennar, and Kollidam rivers.
Officials confirmed that water would be released for irrigation from Kallanai on Sunday, benefiting agricultural areas connected to the network of rivers and canals originating from this historic dam. The dam is a crucial hub for water distribution within Tamil Nadu’s Kaveri system. Several ministers, including Anand, Vinod, Ramesh, Shahjahan, Mohammad Parvez, and Rajkumar, will participate in the water release ceremony. Additionally, local legislators and district officials will attend, creating a festive atmosphere.
As part of Kallanai’s traditional celebrations, ministers and dignitaries will be escorted from the palace area to the dam accompanied by drums and traditional instruments. Prior to the release, special prayers were conducted at the Anjaneyar Temple and near the Vinayak and Karuppannasami temples along the Kollidam River.
As of Saturday evening, the water level at the Mettur reservoir was recorded at 92.25 feet, with an inflow of 8,075 cusecs and an outflow of 7,000 cusecs. Farmers in the delta region will closely monitor the water flow in the coming days, as timely and controlled distribution of Kaveri water is essential for their standing crops and seasonal farming. Water Resources Department officials are expected to adjust the release volume based on reservoir levels, field requirements, and canal conditions.
