Ahmedabad, April 18: Police reported that approximately 15 to 20 individuals have been detained following violent clashes in the town of Dhandhuka, Ahmedabad district, triggered by a road accident on Saturday.
According to officials, the incident began when Sameer was traveling with his wife and his motorcycle had a minor collision with a local youth from the Bharwad community.
Ahmedabad Rural SP Om Prakash Jat stated that the situation escalated from a road accident into a confrontation among those involved. During the altercation, Sameer allegedly made inflammatory remarks, which heightened tensions.
SP Jat further explained that local community members gathered and headed towards Sameer’s residence. However, at that time, Sameer and his family were not at home.
Reports indicate that Rizwan, who was present at the house, allegedly attacked a person named Dharmesh Gamara from the Bharwad community with a knife, resulting in severe injuries to his leg and significant blood loss. He was taken to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Following this death, tensions escalated in the area, prompting groups of people to take to the streets.
The police reported that the agitated crowd vandalized property and set fire to approximately eight to ten shops and tires in various parts of the town, particularly in market areas.
The incident caused widespread panic, leading shopkeepers to close their stores and residents to remain indoors. A heavy police presence, including senior officials and special units, was dispatched to the scene immediately.
Authorities intensified patrols in sensitive areas to prevent further violence and restore order.
Police confirmed that both Sameer and Rizwan have been arrested, along with 15 to 20 others in connection with the violence. Jat stated that FIRs would be filed tonight, and action would be taken. He urged the community to maintain peace.
Officials indicated that more FIRs might be registered based on ongoing investigations and evidence collection.
Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from the area and recording eyewitness statements to identify others involved in the arson and vandalism.
Firefighters from nearby towns were called in to extinguish the fires that broke out in several shops.
Dharmesh Gamara’s body has been sent for post-mortem at the RMS Hospital in Dhandhuka.
The police have increased security in sensitive areas and urged residents to maintain peace and refrain from spreading rumors on social media.
Officials reported that the situation in Dhandhuka is now under control, although precautionary security forces will remain deployed until the investigation is complete.
