
Imphal, April 18: The investigation into the recent shooting incident in Ukhrul district, Manipur, has been handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh announced this decision on Saturday, condemning the attack strongly.
According to police reports, unidentified armed assailants opened fire on vehicles along the Imphal-Dimapur National Highway (NH-2), resulting in the deaths of two individuals from the Naga community. The deceased have been identified as Chinashang Shokhuvungnao (45) and Yaruingam Washum (42).
In a social media post, the Chief Minister stated that the decision to transfer the case to the NIA was made to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation. He also expressed condolences to the families of the victims and announced compensation for them.
Chinashang Shokhuvungnao was a resident of Tashar village and a retired member of the Naga Regiment, while Yaruingam Washum hailed from Kharasom village.
The Chief Minister revealed that security forces have launched an operation to apprehend the attackers. He expressed his sympathies to the grieving families, stating, “I stand with them in this time of sorrow.”
Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister reviewed the law and order situation in the state during a meeting with Major General Gaurav Sharma, Inspector General of Assam Rifles (South). He noted that while the situation is sensitive, it is under control, and security forces are managing the circumstances with utmost caution and restraint.
He urged the public to remain vigilant against rumors and misinformation. The Chief Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring justice and maintaining peace and stability in the state.
Meanwhile, a delegation from the Manipuri Meitei Pangal Welfare Organization met with the Chief Minister to express concerns about the current situation in the state, submitting a memorandum on three key issues. The Chief Minister assured that the government is taking these matters seriously.
