Two Naga Civilians Shot Dead in Manipur Amid Rising Ethnic Tensions

Imphal, April 18: In Manipur, escalating ethnic tensions have led to a tragic incident where unknown armed assailants shot and killed two Naga civilians on Saturday in Ukhrul district. The attack occurred on the Imphal-Dimapur National Highway (NH-2) while vehicles were en route to Ukhrul.

A senior police officer from Imphal confirmed the identities of the deceased as Chinawshang Shokhvuangano (45) and Yaruingam Washum (42). Shokhvuangano was a resident of Tashar village and the son of retired army personnel Ruichumhao Shokhvuangano, while Washum hailed from Kharasom village and was the son of Thuimi Washum.

Following the incident, additional security forces led by senior officials have arrived at the scene, and a search operation is underway to locate the attackers.

The Tangkhul Naga Long’s working committee expressed strong outrage over the attack, alleging that it was carried out by Kuki militants, who are currently under a Suspension of Operations agreement with the government. According to the organization, the incident took place near Yaolen Kuki village, resulting in the immediate death of both victims.

They stated that the attack occurred while passengers, including women, children, and the elderly, were traveling from Imphal to Ukhrul. Six vehicles in the convoy were targeted, and the assailants reportedly used modern weapons, including sniper rifles.

The Tangkhul Naga Long also questioned the role of state and central security agencies, suggesting that their inaction has emboldened militants. This incident occurred just a day after Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh’s visit to Ukhrul, during which he assured security measures and road opening patrols on the highway. The organization has raised doubts about the government’s claims and is demanding an immediate search operation in Yaolen and surrounding Kuki-dominated areas.

Meanwhile, the Kuki-Jo Council has denied any involvement of the Kuki community in this incident. The council stated that the event might be related to internal factional tensions and that blaming the Kuki community without an investigation is unjust.
