Violence Erupts During West Bengal Assembly Elections Amid Voting Chaos

Kolkata, April 29: Violence broke out in several areas of West Bengal during the second phase of assembly elections, including Nadia, Howrah, and South 24 Parganas. In the Basanti region of South 24 Parganas, an attack targeted BJP candidate Vikas Sardar, while clashes were reported between BJP and TMC supporters in Panihati.

Reports indicate that the BJP candidate’s vehicle was vandalized in Basanti, creating a tense atmosphere. This incident occurred at booth number 76, where Vikas Sardar was allegedly attacked while inspecting the polling station.

Sources reveal that as the candidate approached the polling booth, he was assaulted by a group of individuals. His vehicle was also damaged during the incident, and there were attempts to seize weapons from his security personnel. Allegations have surfaced that despite the presence of central forces, security personnel did not intervene to control the situation or assist in the rescue efforts, escalating tensions in the area.

In Hooghly-Chuchura, tensions flared over the removal of several TMC election banners placed along the roadside. Additionally, disputes arose regarding the tearing of voter lists at booths 27, 28, and 29. Reports suggest that some central forces were attempted to be driven away by TMC workers and supporters.

Moreover, a scuffle broke out between BJP and TMC workers at booth 145 in the Panihati assembly constituency. This altercation persisted for a considerable time during voting, prompting security forces to step in and attempt to restore order.

In the Bally assembly area of Howrah, voters expressed outrage due to a malfunctioning machine. Significant chaos ensued at booths 152, 153, and 154. However, central forces managed to control the situation through a baton charge, resulting in the arrest of two individuals. A heavy police presence has been deployed, with the Howrah Police Commissioner also on-site.

In the Sasan area of North 24 Parganas, a group of TMC workers faced strong opposition from AISF supporters and local villagers. Allegations have emerged that members of the ruling party attempted to intimidate voters in the area.

Tensions escalated in the Karimpur assembly area of Nadia district when a West Bengal police officer was seen urging voters to cast their ballots in favor of the TMC. Additionally, BJP polling agent Mosharraf Mir was reportedly brutally attacked at booth number 52 in the Hatra Panchayat, resulting in head injuries that required hospitalization.
