Vice Admiral Manish Honwad Takes Charge as Director and Commandant of AFMC

New Delhi, September 1: Vice Admiral Manish Honwad assumed the role of Director and Commandant of the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) in Pune on Tuesday morning. This institution plays a crucial role in military medicine.

According to the Ministry of Defence, Honwad is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Public Administration in New Delhi, where he earned an M.Phil. in Public Administration. He brings over 37 years of extensive experience in military medicine, having held numerous significant academic, medical, and administrative positions throughout his career.

Vice Admiral Honwad has a longstanding connection with AFMC, having completed his MBBS there in 1989. He later obtained an MD in Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine from AFMC in 1998. Additionally, he received a World Health Organization fellowship in Neuro-Anesthesiology from the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences in Bengaluru.

He has also served as the Additional Director General of Medical Services at Naval Headquarters and has held commanding officer roles at INHS Sanjivani and INHS Ashwini. Before taking on his new responsibilities at AFMC, he managed various critical medical institutions and military medical duties.

Vice Admiral Honwad specializes in training within health services. The Ministry of Defence states that he is a certified Healthcare Simulation Educator from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, USA. He has lectured at numerous national and international conferences on training and simulation techniques related to health services and is recognized as an international speaker on this subject. In recognition of his dedication to patient care and military service, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal in 2025.

He has received commendations from the Chief of Naval Staff twice, in 2006 and 2013, and was also honored with a commendation from the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Command, in 2007, as well as from the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Command, in 2011. On this occasion, the Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services extended best wishes to Vice Admiral Manish Honwad for his new role on behalf of all officers and personnel.
