Understanding the Role and Limits of Yoga Therapy: A Guide from the AYUSH Ministry
The AYUSH Ministry emphasizes personalized yoga therapy, its limitations, and the importance of professional guidance for health benefits.

New Delhi, November 4 (Daily Kiran) : The AYUSH Ministry has issued an important message aimed at raising awareness about the proper use of yoga therapy. It emphasizes that yoga therapy is a personalized approach, tailored to an individual’s specific needs and health conditions.
According to the ministry, a one-size-fits-all method does not apply to yoga therapy. Each person’s physical structure, flexibility, and internal health vary significantly. As such, their physical, mental, and health-related needs differ as well. Therefore, it is essential to choose practices under the supervision of a qualified yoga therapist. Regular practice, appropriate lifestyle changes, and continuous monitoring are crucial for effective outcomes.
The ministry also highlighted the limitations of yoga therapy. For patients with high blood pressure, slipped discs, hernias, heart disease, or those recovering from recent surgeries, standard yoga poses can pose risks. Additionally, yoga therapy is not considered an immediate relief treatment and is not suitable for medical emergencies.
Importantly, yoga therapy should not be viewed as a substitute for medical diagnosis or treatment prescribed by a doctor. Instead, it can complement traditional medical practices, with its true benefits emerging only when activities are tailored to the individual’s specific health conditions.
Under the “Awareness in Yoga Practice” campaign, the ministry urges individuals to practice yoga responsibly. Understanding the proper scope of yoga is a key component of responsible practice. In the digital age, the trend of performing difficult poses based on internet and social media videos has increased, often leading to injuries.
Incomplete knowledge of yoga and reckless practice can result in serious harm rather than benefits. The AYUSH Ministry is advocating for the safe integration of traditional knowledge with modern health systems. Citizens are encouraged to adopt yoga mindfully and prioritize seeking medical advice for any health concerns.
