Ranchi, June 12: In Jharkhand, a bizarre and dangerous trend has emerged where individuals are climbing mobile and high-tension electricity towers to voice their demands or express dissatisfaction. In the past month alone, nearly ten such incidents have been reported across various districts, alarming local authorities and police. Inspired by the character ‘Veeru’ from the popular film ‘Sholay’, people are engaging in high-voltage drama atop towers, addressing issues ranging from administrative corruption to family land disputes, and even matters of love and alcohol.
The latest incident occurred in the Pindatand Panchayat of Giridih district. Late on June 11, chaos erupted when a young man, intoxicated, climbed a 33,000 kV high-tension power tower. Identified as 40-year-old Pankaj Mishra, he reached a height of approximately 70 feet and began making bizarre demands for alcohol from those gathered below. The high voltage posed a significant risk of a serious accident at any moment.
Upon receiving the alert, a police team led by Officer Rajiv Kumar arrived at the scene. The tense standoff lasted about an hour and a half, during which the police demonstrated remarkable patience and understanding. They engaged in continuous dialogue with the young man, ultimately managing to bring him down safely. Earlier, on June 5, 2026, another serious incident occurred in the Katkamsandi block of Hazaribagh district. Here, a young man named Vikash Kumar climbed an 85-foot Airtel tower, frustrated with the alleged corruption and inefficiency of the local administration regarding his land mutation, which had been stalled for 5-6 months.
Vikash descended only after senior officials from the administration and police provided him with written assurances. Chief Minister Hemant Soren has taken note of this serious issue.
Another incident unfolded on June 10, 2026, in the Nawadih area of Bokaro. A young man, upset over not receiving his rightful share of ancestral land, climbed a nearby mobile tower. Local police and administrative officials worked for hours to assure him of legal assistance before safely bringing him down.
These tower-climbing incidents are not limited to administrative or family disputes; they also include unusual cases of romantic entanglements. On June 3, 2026, a girl in the capital city of Ranchi climbed a mobile tower simply because her underage boyfriend had stopped communicating with her. When police struggled to find a solution, they located the boyfriend and brought him to the scene, prompting the girl to agree to come down.
On May 17, 2026, in the Gomoh area of Dhanbad, a young woman climbed a tower in protest against the arrest of her boyfriend, demanding his release. Earlier in May, in Nimiyaghat, Giridih, a married man climbed a 100-foot tower, insisting on remarrying his brother’s sister-in-law, only to be persuaded down by police and locals.
